Why I’ll NEVER Use Whey Protein Powder!

Ok here’s my take on why most protein shakes are absolute horse shit and why I’ll never use whey protein or recommend it in any of my nutrition plans.

Yep, you heard me right, WHEY protein, that stuff that’s great for building muscle and supposed to be really good for you after a hard weight training session? It must be true because the supplement companies told you it was, right?

Well I used to think like this aswell. During my bodybuilding days I used to slug down 3 protein shakes a day like it was going out of fashion, that was until I researched the actual ingredients in these protein powders a while back and I was shocked at the actual truth. Not only are they full of sugar and chemicals but the “whey” protein that’s considered bad ass by top strength coaches & nutritionists, isn’t as good as we think it is.

In this article I’m going to address the reasons why most protein powders are making you fatter, a waste of money and are detrimental to your health. I’m also going to tell you the only 2 powders that I recommend but bare in your mind that if fat loss is your goal then you don’t really need to worry about a protein shake.

So let’s take a look at some of the ingredients put in these “amazing super-duper” protein shakes:

First up, Whey Protein

There are 2 different types of whey protein, whey isolate and whey concentrate.

Whey Protein isolate is a by-product from cheese-making. It’s the clear liquid used after the milk has curdled and is often used to feed pigs. Those of you that read my blog regularly will know that I’m not a fan of cow’s milk. Humans aren’t designed to drink cow’s milk, baby cows are!

Not only is cow’s milk highly allergenic for most people but the process of refining whey protein isolate involves heat and acid treatment which kills off any friendly bacteria which would be good for your gut health. The treatment process also leaves the milk putrid (yep, you’re drinking putrid protein when you slug down that protein shake!) and hard to dissolve which is why manufacturers have to use additives to make it easier to mix.

Ever noticed that some protein powders are a bitch to dissolve? There are always lumpy bits in it that don’t seem to dissolve aren’t there! Well now you know why 

Whey protein concentrate could be considered a slightly better option than whey isolate. Unpasteurised whey protein from hormone free, grass fed cows, is better because it doesn’t go through the pasteurisation process however it’s still COW’S MILK and we can still get better sources of protein elsewhere without having to resort to whey.

Secondly, Sweeteners

Sucralose is a sweetener manufacturers use to give the protein its flavour and has exactly the same effect on your body as normal sugar does meaning it will play havoc with your insulin levels which is bad news if you’re susceptible to love handle fat in particular. Plus the fact sugar gives you diabetes and is also terrible for your health.

Acesulfame Potassium or Acesulfame K is another popular sweetener that manufacturers use. It’s also found in food and beverages aswell. It is 200 times sweeter than normal sugar so you’ll get all the same problems sugar will give you plus MORE!

The problem with Acesulfame is that there have been no long term studies done on it. Acesulfame K contains the carcinogen methylene chloride.
Long-term exposure to methylene chloride can cause headaches, depression, nausea, mental confusion, liver effects, kidney effects, visual disturbances and cancer in humans.

There has been a great deal of controversy to the use of acesulfame K but at this time, the Foods Standards Agency has not asked for any tests to be done on this sweetener.

Aspartame is also found in some protein powders and is a highly controversial sweetener; it’s been banned in several countries. Basically the liver cannot break aspartame down so it’s sent straight to the brain. Not only is this found in protein powders but also sports drinks, chewing gum, children’s food and loads of other stuff. There are over 92 different health side-affects from consuming aspartame. Horrendous food additive!

So basically the body has no use for any of these sweeteners in the body so in order to reduce their circulation, the body will dump them into your fat cells which will add to your toxic load which in turn will make you fatter. It’s as simple as that really.

Not only this but research is clearly showing that our bodies cannot cope with these sweeteners and are seriously damaging our health.

So what if I was to tell you that there are MUCH better alternatives to using whey protein? Alternatives that are free from all these additives and sweeteners and won’t compromise your health?

Would you be interested?

Well you should be because there is!

Protein powder made from rice or hemp is just as good as whey and in my opinion is better as you’re not consuming putrid milk! There are only a couple of powders I recommend and they are:

Sun Warrior Protein
And Vega Protein

Both are made from (non-soy) whole grain rice protein, are gluten free and have a complete amino-acid profile. I’m not affiliated with either of these products however I do believe that these are the cleanest protein powders out there at the moment and I have personally had good results using both.

Peace out and stop drinking cows milk! You're not a baby cow! :-)

Yes, whey protein is bad for you. It is hard to digest and is toxic. A doctor may think a person is healthy when they're not. Doctors don't know about health. The strongest animals in the world get their protein from nature. Getting your protein from animal products will give you dead protein with no proper enzymes. Natures protein is the best. Don't believe me, go ask a gorilla.

Dominic Caspar said...

Whey protein is NOT hard to digest, it is exactly the opposite. It's easy to absorb - this is one of the reasons it is used straight after the training session. Most whey supplements are rich in enzymes which were added for better digestion.

Side effects are usually result of wrong use of supplement (overdose, poor hydration, extensive low carbohydrate diet). You have to remember that people who take supplements are very often self-education in field of nutrition. For that reason manufacturers need to make sure the highest standard supplement is provided - or face losing the business.

I believe protein shakes are a total waste of money and eating correctly with real wholesome food is the cheapest and best option, I believe what this guy is saying about whey and definitely sweetners to be absolutely true! Sugar is alot healthier than aspartame!!! Eat chicken, tuna, salmon, baked beans, eggs, chickpeas, and beef and pork if you need to increase your protein guys :) and don't forget carbs are even more important than protein the muscle building diet should consist of 60%carbs 30%protein and 10% fats.

You're so ignorant & full of shit.

He is a hundred percent right. Whey protein, milk, and cheese are not good for our health. Most doctors don't know shit about health. Scientists and their studies have proven these theories a fact. People need to wake up and read more or understand big pharm and most doctors today are in it to sell meds rather than find the cause or cure to a disease or allergy. Eat greens, and stay lean. Nature offers everything the body needs that you can't get from a man made synthetic concoction.

Anonymous said...

Its hysterical how someone say your ignorant and full of shit. Yet has no knowledgeable argument to prove ignorance. I think that might be ignorance. People are so brain washed when it comes to health.

I agree that whey products are not the best solution to protein drinks. Plant alternatives are becoming increasingly available as people are becoming more aware of the differences and how they work in our bodies. For those of you who are avid protein powder users, just try the plant alternatives and see how you feel. I think its great to expose the truth about the harmful effects of the alternative sweeteners out there, but there are some that do not affect the body negativey: Stevia Plus (from Sweet Leaf-my favorite) and I hear Mung bean extract is good for you too but I don't know about that one as much. Agave is sweeter so you use less, so that might help. Good Luck all, in your efforts for increased health.

I am a diabetic bodybuilder/powerlifter and I must say that this article is a huge load of shit, it really sounds like it was written by someone with absolutely no facts, or by someone who attempted to become a bodybuilder but failed miserably and felt the need to blame it on something.... by the way sugar doesn't "give" a person diabetes.

Some truth, some bullshit here. First off, milk is not bad for you if it's not from your mom's tits. The chemical makeup is virtually identical with human milk having somewhat more lactose and less protein. The harmful part of cow's milk is the mass produced part (poorly fed cows confined to dirty spaces and drugged up). Buying organics here is important as your get rid of the hormones and the cows are healthier being able to roam. Yes, heat is used in whey extraction and kills the healthy bacteria required to digest LACTOSE, not whey. Vegetable proteins are just as "dead" when you consume them in powder form. You can get vegetable proteins with full amino acid profiles now, but that does not make them better than whey, MAYBE even at best. Truths are that yes Sucralose has been proven to mess with digestion; aspartame, I do not want to even get into how bad that is. Many countries have banned it though except the US. Stevia leaf extract is becoming widely more popular as it is a natural sugar alternative. Buy whey protein from quality manufacturers and you're fine; also check labels.
Be informed and don't spout things you have not fully done your research on.

Anonymous said...

What a crock of shit. Everything they said about all the different fake sugars is somewhat true, but there is nothing wrong with whey protein. It is the best hands down when compared to other protein forms. Again, I agree about the fake sugars, and yes, you can find protein powders without them, but that doesn't mean you have to go vegan in the process.

I farted again sorry

Could you possibly provide the sources of your research?

That is right. He should at least give a proof why that man is ignorant. It turns out he is the one. Lol

One source of his research is Dr Mercola. That's where he got that "putrid" crap from, although Mercola was talking about whey ice so he could sell you his whey concentrate.

Hi my name is Del, I am a Consultant in the Health & Wellness Industry. So I am a little knowledgable about the facts! of a certain food products. Yes Whey is not good for you, due to the chemicals & what they do with the milk? To really educate a person, you should find your own way of knowing the facts about food. Take up a nutritional course on this subject, and educate yourself and get the right knowledge.

We should be asking not trusting on the manufactuers who are making these type of products the question? why has cancer become like a virus, its definitely in the foods and products we are using every single
day.

Dr Rohan Weetasinghe is a professional on this type of subject..send him an email and book yourself on one of his courses www.thebaldtruth.co.uk this will blow you away.

Not only did I educate myself, I started my own business in the Health & Wellness Indusrty educating myself & others to use better healthy products with no chemicals, safer products with no gluten or diary, we are vegan approved and we don't test on any animal or any animal by products. Our Protein shakes are made up from rice, pea & cranberry protein and work to support the muscles. My son has a protein shake everyday to support his muscles when he is playing sports. I'm surprised you didn't mention creatine on this fabulous article. Though your position stands on whey protein are 100% correct, you should inform viewers that in conjunction with protein are people who take creatine. Now creatine is a man man supplement. The claim that creatine is found in fish is bogus. Creatine does not have any substantial benefits. Creatine supplementation leads to water weight gain around muscles... Contributing to weight gain when ceasing supplementation. Just like whey protein, when stopped using, creatine stores as fat. So there you have it whey protein and creatine... The two biggest contributers in faulty body composition and obesity. Lolssdddss

Whey protein is the root of obesity no.

I only use All Natural Egg White Protein Powder. It is the healthiest way to get protein after a workout. Humans need animal proteins in their diets because they are different than plant proteins. I don't like whey protein because my body stores it as fat. Egg whites on the other hand are treated like proteins, which is the whole point.

I cannot beleive your utter ignorance, never in my life have I seen an argument so clearly biased while avoiding counterclaims. Not only do you make grand claims of the evils of the supplement companies but you lack any verifiable proof, most people are not allergic to cows milk and if they are they would not use such a product. Please consider doing some actual research before you take down a product that didn't benefit you, taking a natural Whey protein isolate I have found tremendous success and greater health benefits.

You guys sound like you wanna argue more than you wanna your health and or fitness haha.. well i can personally tell you I'm a bodybuilder and have used many different protein products.. and in the process of watching my body change i can tell you that every time i used protein powders i gained extra body fat and bloating as well as weight gain in my face and felt more sluggish. Actual protein through food and nutrients through food works better every time i can promise all those who are trying to lose weight and get cut! Good luck and stop buying into gimmicks and shortcuts that don't work!

John Fisher said...

There are other reasons that whey protein is a poor choice. It is environmentally unfriendly first off. It takes 78,500 liters of water to produce 1 ton of protein from dairy sources. Also, whey is a milk byproduct. 95% of the cattle in America is being raised on GMO corn and grain, rather than the grass that nature intended them to be raised on. Now, the purpose of the corn and grain being genetically modified is to make them more resistant to pesticides, which means the fields can be sprayed with MORE pesticides to improve the per acre yield. Where do you think those pesticides go when the cattle eat the grains and corn? Yes, that's right it ends up in your meat, milk, cheese, and whey. So, if you want to be consuming pesticides, go ahead and use your whey protein, but don't forget what I told you.

Whey protein like most animal products serves only to hinder our health. I am currently working towards improving my health by going from a vegetarian diet to a vegan one. I'm already showing signs of fat loss and have began to build more muscle in what I would call a far more natural way than relying on a shake filled with chemicals and protein loaded with growth hormones, meant to aid a calves development!
